Shadow and Bone

In Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo, we are introduced to Alina Starkov, an orphaned mapmaker in the First Army of Ravka. The story is set in a war-torn world divided by the Shadow Fold, a swath of darkness filled with flesh-eating monsters. During a mission to cross the Fold, Alina's regiment is attacked, and in a moment of fear, she discovers a dormant power within her, a power that could save her country.
